Welcome Back to Term 2 at St. John’s!

Dear St. John’s Community,

I am thrilled to welcome each of you back as we embark on Term 2. I hope you’ve all had a rejuvenating break and are as excited as I am to dive into Term 2 with us.

This term is packed with activities and opportunities for students to shine. We have had our first Instrumental Lessons last week with Mr Brookes and Mrs Walden – thank you to those students who are playing guitar, ukelele, percussion, piano, and singing vocals for making our tutors feel so welcome this week.

In our Arts program this term we also have our Junior and Senior Dance troupes, Beat Boppers, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Junior and Senior Sing-along Choirs, Rock Band and Chapel Action Group.

In the Lunchtime activity space this term we have on offer: Lego Construction Club, Colouring Club, Reef Guardians Paper Making, Japanese Club, 3D Printing Club, Crochet Club and our newly launched Jump Rope for Heart with Miss Bryan and helpers. We also have our SSRC working on some special projects and activities for us to enjoy.

This term promises to be filled with numerous exciting events that will enrich our community and enhance our learning environment. Please note special dates below:

25 April-  ANZAC Day (We welcome our School community to march with us at the Bargara Dawn Service and/or the Civic service) – Letter emailed on to families on 28 March. Please ensure full formal uniform is worn.

26 April- Prep to Year 6 Cross Country – don’t forget your house shirts and team spirit! Location – Flint Street Oval (Bywash Park) located next to the Bundaberg Basketball Centre.

29 April-  Mother’s Day Stall. We are still seeking volunteers to assist with our Mother’s Day Stall! Sign up to volunteer at volunteersignup.org/9CRK3. Thank you for your support.

17 May-  Senior School Disco at St John’s Hall

22 May- Under 8s Morning – “Connecting Culture through Play”. This is an exciting event for our Juniors, and we look forward to providing you with more information in the lead up to this date.

26 May- Community Sunday – We welcome everyone to attend this time of worship and fellowship with us (Year 1 and Year 4 classes specifically will be invited to participate during this service).

7 June- Junior School Disco at St John’s Hall

19 June- Last Day of school for students

Athletics Carnival 2024 – The Bundaberg Athletics Club has advised us this week that due to construction / upgrades, our Athletics Carnival is not able to go ahead on the 12th – 14th of June. We are presently waiting on an alternate date for our Athletics Carnival, and will advise families as soon as we have confirmation. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your understanding.

Publicity Permissions – If you have not done so, please log onto Parent Lounge and finalise your child’s publicity information as soon as possible.

SAFETY REMINDER – we have observed vehicles parking illegally on the corner of Bell and Boundary Street during drop-off and pick-up times. This is a safety concern as parking out of car parking spaces is blocking the view of oncoming traffic. I appreciate your commitment to parking only is the designated spaces and keeping our community safe. Remember you can pick up until 3:20pm so not everyone needs to arrive right on 3:00pm.

As your Principal, I am here to support all families in your Primary School journey and beyond. I encourage you to take full advantage of the programs and resources available to you. Remember, my door is always open, and I am here to work with you to ensure you have the best possible experience at St. John’s. Please do not hesitate to reach out at any time, whether you have a concern, need guidance, or simply wish to share your thoughts and ideas.

Together, let’s make Term 2 a memorable and productive one. Here’s to a great start and an even greater term ahead!

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and perseverance available through faith, which can be especially encouraging as everyone tackles new challenges and opportunities this term.

Grace and Peace

The Power of Two

“Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively.”

– Ecclesiastes 4:9

Teaching Teams at St John’s

This year St John’s Lutheran Primary School has two classes in each year level for the first time in history. This means each year level has two teachers working as a team to collaboratively plan, prepare, teach, reflect, assess and moderate.

There are many benefits to team teaching. Our teaching teams spend time together planning, this allows them to share their experience and knowledge with each other. The co-planning process also encourages two teachers to bounce ideas off each other in order to deliver the strongest, most creative lessons. Shared planning also means that all students in a year level are exposed to the same content, projects and curriculum achievement standards no matter which class they are in. Another wonderful benefit is when students experience their teachers working together, they understand the power of respect amongst peers.

Professional development for our teaching teams

Last week all our teachers engaged in a workshop on team teaching lead by Vanessa Noonan, Director of Teaching and Learning for Lutheran Education Queensland. The workshop focused on co-teaching models and learning space design. It was wonderful to see our year level teams so focused on working together effectively to find the best innovative teaching practices and learning spaces for their students.

Our Year 5 team co-design their learning space to allow for best practice in teaching together in an open classroom.

Our Year 2 and 4 teams discuss various models for co-teaching and how they can use them more effectively as a team.

Term 2 Units of Work

Our teaching teams have continued to create and develop together some very exciting and relevant inquiry-based units of work for Term 2 which focus on making a positive impact in the world we live in. As parents you will have many opportunities to engage in our children’s learning as the term progresses. Watch this space!

 Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy and numeracy still remain a core curriculum learning focus at St John’s this term, as we know, all other learning becomes possible when there is mastery in these fields. Our learning teams will continue to work together to keep this focus and support all students in their literacy and numeracy development.

 God bless.

WELCOME

Welcome everyone to Term 2. We have a busy and exciting term ahead.

ST JOHN’S VALUES AND SPIRIT – 6 RS

Respect – ‘for self and others’

Rigour – ‘work hard, work tough’

Responsibility – ‘for learning and actions’

Resilience – Keep on keeping on

Random Acts of Kindness – ‘It’s cool to be kind’

Relationships – ‘the reason’

We would like to reinforce some steps to follow when we face a challenge. In applying our Values and Spirit to everything that we do, using the following tools will help us when things go wrong. These strategies also promote a safe and supportive environment for all.

THINK U KNOW

Students will be involved in a complementary educational program run by District Crime Prevention Coordinator – Senior Constable Brittany Duncan from the QPS, in week 5 of this term. The ThinkUKnow Australia program, is aligned to the Australian Curriculum (Health and  Physical Education and Digital Technologies curriculum learning areas) and aims to support positive, proactive engagement between children and police. These presentations aim to help students understand the benefits and challenges of technology and develop critical thinking skills to identify harmful situations and how to get help. Students from Prep to Year 6 will engage in age-appropriate modules focusing on physical and emotional growth, nutrition, safety, and respectful relationships. Please do not hesitate to contact the office should you have further questions.

SSRC (STUDENT SERVICES REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL)

Our SSRC students have been busy working upon the new prayer space in our school. Our Prayer space can be located in the area behind the junior toilets. This is a place of quiet reflection and will be utilised by students in prayer and meditative reflection. The SSRC have been working upon symbols for prayer which will be colour coded on a prayer wall. Later in the year, the Year One students will be adding to use of this space, and creating artefacts that support prayer.

Extra-Curricular Arts Program

The Arts are alive at St John’s Lutheran Primary School.

I hope everyone is feeling rested and rejuvenated after an exciting and fun filled term 1. A huge congratulations goes out to all students who participated in the end of term dance showcase held in week 10. It was so wonderful to see the students’ skills and confidence develop over the term and their performance and choreography come to fruition during our inhouse showing. I look forward to finding further opportunities to showcase our students’ creativity and build their confidence and rigor through performance.

This term in the arts, all students will be exploring the Visual Arts curriculum and developing their knowledge and understanding of the elements of art through varying mediums. Stay tuned for some highlights in the newsletters this term.

Extra-Curricular Program

This term we welcome our new extra-curricular arts program to the array of opportunities offered to our young learners. We are blessed to welcome our new instrumental music tutors, Mrs Deb Walden who will be working across piano, vocals, choir and rock band and Mr Adrian Brooks who will be working across guitar, ukulele, and rock band. With all the new additions to our rich arts program it may take same time to settle into our new routines. The timetable for extra-curricular arts activities in the hall and music room have been displayed on the doors of the hall and I encourage students to check this timetable to ensure they don’t miss their respective activities.
