Staffing

This week we welcomed Danielle McNamara to our school community. Mrs McNamara is a Student Services Officer and will be working as part of our Administration Team.

Term 4 Morning Routine

Last week I spoke to students about changes to our morning routine for Term 4. This change will mean that students are involved in quiet activities after morning drop-off from 8:00am – 8:20am. Students will arrive to school, place their school bags on the bag racks and then head to an activity. Preps will have activities set-up in the Prep outdoor space and the Year 1 – Year 6 students will have activities set-up around the mango tree area. We are hopeful this format will be supportive of children’s developmental needs and have them ready to enter the classrooms for learning regulated and ‘switched-on’ for learning.  Students and staff have made suggestions for morning activities which I have collated, and we will use to inform activity choices.

Uniform

You may have heard from your children that we have made some immediate decisions regarding our school uniform. These changes are boys no longer required to have their formal shirts tucked in, unless for a formal event. We do ask that your child has a shirt that is the correct size and fit for them. This change will allow students to feel more comfortable when moving and learning throughout the school day. We will have a skort and blouse option for girls early in 2024 which will allow the girls to choose from the current dress or skort and blouse as formal options. These changes are the first step in transitioning our uniforms to a wardrobe of options for students.

ICT Audit

Mr Higgins has recently coordinated an ICT audit across the school. The information harnessed from this audit is being actioned immediately. New iPads have recently arrived, and replacement keyboards and other hardware is on its way. Thank you, Mr Higgins!

Junior Sports Carnival

Due to weather conditions we needed to postpone our Junior Sports Carnival. Whilst this was disappointing, we always make these decisions with the Health and Safety of our students and staff at the forefront. We look forward to a rescheduled carnival in early Term 4. Thank you for your understanding.

Parents and Friends Association Update

Due to insufficient numbers of candidates to fulfill an operating P&F executive, the P&F is currently recessed with the School Council and The School acting as caretakes. This will ensure our school community and events continue, and most importantly previous suggestions put forth by the P&F will continue to be considered, and where able enacted. The school will send information to parents requesting volunteers to assist with events as required. Our School Council will communicate with parents early next year regarding future processes for our P&F. Watch this space for some exciting additions to our school grounds as suggested by our previous P&F!

Musical – The Prize

Thank you in advance to our whole school community for your efforts in preparing for our Musical this week. The rehearsals I have watched have left me feeling immensely proud of all we do at St John’s Lutheran Primary School. I would like to thank Mrs MacDonald, Mr Barker, Mrs Evans, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Heading, Mrs Heidke and Mr Rewald for their additional efforts in preparing all things musical. We have tickets remaining for both shows if you have someone you may like to bring along.

Personally, I would like to thank each one of you for your unwavering support this term. Your trust and positive affirmations have made a significant impact on my transition to the Acting Principal role. I am excited and feel privileged to continue serving our school community in Term 4.

I would also like to acknowledge the teachers, staff, and administrators for their tireless efforts in Term 3, providing an excellent education and a safe, welcoming atmosphere for our children.

In advance I pray all families have a safe and enjoyable holiday period and we look forward to welcoming you back to school in Term 4.

Curriculum Connections

Year 5

CO2 dragsters are cars used as miniature racing cars which are propelled by a carbon dioxide cartridge that is pierced to start the release of the gas. The cars typically race on an 18-metre track. They are used to demonstrate mechanical principles such as mass, force, acceleration, and aerodynamics.

Two hooks (eyelets or screw eyes) linked to a string (usually monofilament fishing line) on the bottom of the car prevent the vehicle from losing control during launch. In a race, a laser scanner records the speed of the car at the end of its run.

The Year 5 and 6 Students have had the opportunity to design, 3D print and race their CO2 Dragsters at the upcoming Queensland CO2 Dragster Challenge in the Division B Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Section. Entries are judged based on meeting the specifications of ingenuity, creativity, quality of presentation and of course, race results.

LCAQD CHRISTMAS CARD DESIGN COMPETITION

Bishop Mark Vainikka invited students from all Lutheran Schools to assist with a Christmas Card Design to be sent to all the congregations, aged care facilities and schools of the Queensland District. This opportunity was well received from the students at St John’s Lutheran Primary School Bundaberg, with over 95 entries. Best wishes to all those who entered. We may just see one of our student designs on the front cover of the LCAQD Christmas Card for 2023.

SSRC HAMPER DRIVE

This year St John’s SSRC have partnered with The Salvation Army’s Hamper Appeal in lead up to the Christmas period. We please ask that you consider donating non-perishable goods during Term 4 as part of this appeal. Further information will be sent out in Week 1 of Term 4.

THE LOVE LANGUAGE OF GIFTS AND ACTS OF SERVICE

These are two very tangible and outward signs of showing and giving love to others: gifts and acts of service. These very practical and effective ways of showing love help people to figure out how to connect with each other.

Do you have a child or family member earning a treat or having their favourite food made for them? This person’s love language might be strong in gifts. What about a person who likes it when people helps with chores or school projects, this person’s love language might be strong in acts of service.

There are many opportunities for everyone to give and receive gifts and acts of service.  We use them to thank those who have made contributions to our lives. These two love languages can be very visible but they don’t need to be big or expensive. There are some wonderfully simple ideas to encourage and connect with others through the means of giving gifts and acts of service. Acts of service can also be quite simple and meaningful: teaching them how to serve others by being involved in baking biscuits or making a meal. For children, knowing you’ll partner with them, can make a big connection difference! We know that when we meet our child’s need for love, we are helping to fill their love tank. God bless you as you grow, encourage and explore the different ways to connect with those in your family.

Wishing our families, a wonderfully safe, blessed, restful and replenishing spring holiday over the two-week school break. We look forward to our final term for the school year.

BOOK WEEK – Read, Grow, Inspire!

Book week at St John’s gave the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of reading.  The week was spent celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators by highlighting the importance of reading.  What a wonderful opportunity to encourage our young people to read and enjoy themselves.

Each year, across Australia, The CBCA brings children and books together celebrating Children’s Book Week. During this time St John’s and Dymocks came together for one glorious week to celebrate Australian Children’s Literature.

The theme for this year’s CBCA Book Week was ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’.
