From the Principal

I am truly touched and immensely grateful for the overwhelming support and enthusiasm you have shown me during my first weeks in the Acting Principal role. Your kind words and encouragement have been immeasurable to me, and I am humbled by the sense of unity that defines our St. John’s family.

“Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV) – Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

This verse underscores the power of unity and collaboration. Just as a cord woven from three strands is more durable and resilient, so too are individuals and groups who come together in harmony and support.

It’s often said that the strength of a community lies in its ability to come together during times of change and transition. As we move forward, I am excited to continue working with each and every one of you to create an environment that nurtures the talents and potential of all students at our school.

Please see below some changes we have implemented in the past 2 weeks.

Staffing

  • Natasha Higgins will be working as the Curriculum Coordinator each week from Wednesday – Friday for the remainder of 2023. This role is a backfill position whilst I am in the Acting Principal Role.  We know Mrs Higgins will do a wonderful job in this position.

  • Ros Hunting has accepted a contract to teach in Prep Red from Wednesday – Friday for the remainder of 2023. Thank you to our Prep Red students and parents for welcoming Mrs Hunting so warmly.

  • Kellie Ayton has accepted a teaching contract for Tuesday and Wednesday in the Library. Kellie will take classes during the allocated Library times. Mrs Ayton has previously been employed at LORDS (Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School) in Pimpama.

  • Jenny Linderberg is now working Monday afternoon in addition to her 4 days per week. This will allow Ms Linderberg to facilitate Prep music lessons for the remainder of the year. Thank you to Mrs Carroll who has been teaching Prep music.

  • Ms Linderberg is taking Long Service Leave for the last 3 weeks of term.  We thank Mrs Stewart and Mrs Scott for covering this position in Ms Linderberg’s absence. Ms Linderberg has been teaching two lessons per week of Japanese in weeks 5-7 and this will be balanced with two lessons per week of music in weeks 8-10. Thank you Ms Linderberg for all of your organisation and planning in readiness for your leave.

  • Nathan Higgins will be working as PE/ICT Coordinator from Tuesday – Friday for the remainder of 2023. Nathan will continue to organise Sporting Events and have time to focus on ICT improvements across the school.

  • Office administration is a busy place! We are welcoming Danielle McNamara & Launa Zaal to our team in coming weeks. Both Danielle and Launa will be working four days per week in admin as Student Services Officers. Launa will begin in week 9 and Danielle in week 10. We are looking forward to these lovely ladies joining our team!

Semester 2 Parent Teacher Interview

  • Information will be emailed to families shortly; interviews will take place in week 1 of term 4 – bookings will be made through parent lounge. As always at St John’s, if you require an appointment at any time with a member of staff, please reach out to them to book an appropriate and mutually convenient time.

Blessings

Curriculum Connections

Classroom Learning

St John’s students are involved in a wide range of learning opportunities each and every day. This fortnight we would like to share with you teaching and learning that has been happening in the Prep classrooms and during Physical Education.

During Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), students in Prep have been learning about families, celebrations and significant events. To share their own story with each other, Prep students created a memory box and chose photographs, artefacts and mementos from home to add to their box. Students have enjoyed sharing their special items with the class and discovering the significant events and people in each other’s lives.

Woolworths Cricket Blast

Last week, students in Years 5 & 6 competed in the Woolworths Cricket Blast local school competition held at Kendall Flats. St John’s entered three teams into the competition. All teams played well and are congratulated on their effort and sportsmanship.

Students were excited to meet Lucy Hamilton who plays for Queensland in the Women’s National Cricket League and for Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League.

In Physical Education lessons, Year 1 to 6 have been learning about AFL with Mr Higgins and have had the opportunity to learn AFL skills from a visiting AFL Development Officer. Each week the Development Officer assists with skill and technique development. Students have enjoyed practising kicking, handballing and playing the games ‘Kick Tennis’, ‘Bomb the Coach’ and ‘Ogre’s Treasure’.

ANXIETY/SCHOOL REFUSAL

School refusal is when children get extremely upset at the idea of going to school and often miss some or all of the school day. This distress doesn’t go away.

School refusal can mean that children have trouble going to school or trouble leaving home. Children who refuse to go to school usually spend the day at home with their parents’ knowledge, even though their parents try hard to get them to go. School refusal is not a condition that is clinically diagnosed, rather it is a name given to an emotional response, perhaps linked to an underlying issue.

If your child refuses to go to school, you might feel that school nights and mornings are a ‘battle’. Your child might:

  • cry, throw tantrums, yell or scream
  • refuse to move
  • beg or plead not to go
  • complain of aches, pains and illness before school, which generally get better if you let your child stay at home

If this is a problem with your child, it is important that parents/school work together early to address the situation. Early intervention is imperative. Please reach out to your child’s teacher, or to Mrs Carroll should you require support in having your child at school every day learning, as every minute of every school day counts! Library News – Book Week

Thank you from St John’s Library!

It is evident at St John’s that our families take reading very seriously and have a deep love for books. This year’s book week theme ‘Red Grow Inspire’, has highlighted the power of words and the boundless horizons books can offer.

With a remarkable collection sourced from the renowned Dymocks book shop, this year’s book fair has been an incredible success. We are thrilled to announce that a staggering $8500 worth of books found new homes. We receive 20% commission of these sales from Dymocks, which enables us to purchase more books and great literature for our school library over the next 12 months. The success of this event is a testament to your unwavering support, we extend our heartfelt gratitude.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the families who bought and donated books to the library from our Book Fair. The books will be covered and catalogued and put out on display for students to borrow and enjoy.
