From the Principal

Dear Families of St. John’s,

Thank you for a beautiful start to our school year. This year, our theme is “Flourish in Faith.” I shared the following with students at Chapel last week as we introduced this theme and thought about what this means to us.

Picture a small seed. When planted in nourishing soil, given water, and bathed in sunlight, it grows into a beautiful flower or a mighty tree. Similarly, each of you is like that seed, ready to grow in God’s love and wisdom. To “Flourish” means to grow in a healthy, vibrant, and joyful way. And “Faith” is not just about believing in ourselves and each other; it’s also about trusting in God’s plan for us, understanding that He is with us in every step, guiding and nurturing us.

This year, as we learn and play, let’s keep our theme close to our hearts. Whether we are inside our classrooms, on the playground, or at home, we can always flourish in faith. When we show kindness, when we overcome challenges, and when we help and respect others, we are growing just like that seed, nurtured by God’s love.

I am so proud to be your Principal and to see how each of you will grow this year. Remember, God is with you in everything you do. With His guidance and our shared efforts, we are going to have an amazing year, full of learning, kindness, and faith.

May God bless each one of you as we start this exciting journey. Let’s make this year a beautiful testament to our theme, “Flourish in Faith.”

Please see below for very important information, updates, and reminders.

Afternoon Pick-up and Morning Drop-off

I would like to emphasise the importance of procedures for afternoon pick-up and morning drop-off. Please do not double park or expect students or staff to cross the road for you. At afternoon pick-up, if you are parking on the opposite side of the road, please walk to your child at the gate. During these times, our staff have the primary responsibility to oversee the safety of our students. Should adults require a conversation with a staff member rostered on duty, please make a time outside of the staff member’s allocated duty time. I have advised staff to kindly explain that their focus must remain on students during duty times. Staff may request parents to wait for a few minutes or, alternatively, they may be available to offer a phone call after their duty period.

Please speak to your children about both the morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up routines. Please emphasise never leaving the school gates or crossing a road without an adult. Your cooperation and understanding in this matter is greatly appreciated – we all have our part to play in keeping our students safe.

Parent Information Evening

Please note that we have scheduled our Parent Information Evening for this Thursday, February 1st, for Year 1 – 6 families. We look forward to seeing a representative from each family join us on this night.

Community Connections in 2024

This year, we are particularly excited about several upcoming events, including Friday Chapel coffee and connect sessions, a renewed focus on classroom showcase events, school disco, sporting carnivals, new Arts performances, and parent-teacher evenings. Each of these occasions offer a unique opportunity to strengthen our community bonds, and we eagerly anticipate your participation. After thorough consideration and discussions, we have reached the difficult decision to cancel our Welcome BBQ this year. This decision, prompted by logistical challenges and the extensive planning required to organise such an event early in the year, is beyond our control at this point. While the BBQ has historically been a highlight of our school calendar, it has become increasingly difficult to host in the past few years. Thankfully, this is only one of the many avenues through which our community connects and engages.

Uniform

It has been wonderful to see our girls enjoying their new uniform option of culottes and blouses. This addition to our uniform options for girls has been welcomed by many as a more appropriate and comfortable school and play option. I would like to draw all families’ attention to our 2024 Uniform Reminders: Please see the Uniform Policy and Expectations document on Parent Lounge. Please ensure ALL expectations are followed.

GRIP Student Leadership Conference

We were delighted to have our Year 6 elected leaders, along with Mrs. Bosch and Mr Bakker, attend the GRIP Student Leadership Conference this week. The 2024 Primary Program was themed “Step Forward” and was specifically tailored to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills. The sessions featured engaging activities and discussions and covered crucial topics such as taking initiative, making sacrifices, sharing innovative ideas, and mastering the extra steps for lasting impact.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns or require further information. Your involvement is a crucial part of our school’s success, and together, I am confident in the outstanding year we have ahead. Thank you for being an integral part of our school community. Let’s continue building on this wonderful start to the year, united in our dedication to the growth and success of our students.

Blessings,

Jocelyn Bakker

Curriculum Connections

Dear members of the St. John’s community,

It was with great joy I accepted the offer extended to me for the position of “Director of Learning and Teaching” at St John’s Lutheran Primary School. My name is Debi Bosch, and I’m a South African immigrant. I moved to Bundaberg in April 2017, when my husband was invited to become the minister of the Bundaberg Uniting Church, where he continues to serve. I have three children, who completed their schooling here in Bundaberg and are now studying various degrees in Brisbane.

I qualified as a Primary school teacher just as the new millennium started and have gone on to have many different educational roles. Some of these roles include teaching, lecturing, writing textbooks, developing courses for teacher training and running curriculum workshops for in service teachers. Most recently, I have been back in the classroom teaching grade 6 at a local Bundaberg school.

As I step into my new role at St John’s Lutheran Primary School, I would like to acknowledge the incredible work that has been done in the curriculum development space by Mrs Jocelyn Bakker, who has led the way for St John’s teachers to implement the Australian Curriculum through a design thinking, inquiry-based approach, while encouraging students to “develop their God given talents so they can shape and enrich their world” (as is the aim of Lutheran Schools Australia). I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Natasha Higgins who, over just a few short months, did a mammoth amount of work in helping teachers rewrite their teaching units to align with the revised v9 Australian Curriculum.

Over the last week, I have had the privilege of reading through the various planning documents created by our teachers to be used this year, and I am so looking forward to seeing their many wonderful ideas for engaging students in meaningful learning come to fruition. I am sure as parents and carers you will be amazed at all the learning opportunities your children will have in 2024!

St John’s truly is a remarkable school, with passionate, caring staff and friendly, happy students. Thank you so much for welcoming me to St John’s! I am excited to serve the St John’s community and play my role, with God’s help, in shaping the heads, hearts and hands of our students.

God bless,

Debi Bosch

Director of Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

WELCOME

Welcome everyone to a new school year. What a privilege it has been to greet the students and families (both new and existing) thus far. For those existing families, and also to those who are new to St John’s, we welcome you and hope that you feel the warm sense of community and level of care that is all things St John’s. Respect and Relationships can be noted as the bookends of our framework for Building Positive Behaviours.

ST JOHN’S VALUES AND SPIRIT – 6 RS

Respect – ‘for self and others’

Rigour – ‘work hard, work tough’

Responsibility – ‘for learning and actions’

Resilience – Keep on keeping on

Random Acts of Kindness – ‘It’s cool to be kind’

Relationships – ‘the reason’

Whilst our Values and Spirit remain unchanged, we have ‘value added’ to help bring our 6 R’s alive this year. You will notice NEW FRIENDS OF THE 6 R’s. What a wonderful way for our students to make connections to the strong sense of character we encourage and foster in our community.

We will continue to reinforce our Values and Spirit in everything that we do, promoting a safe and supportive learning and teaching environment for all.

LIFE EDUCATION

Students will be involved in a complementary educational program run by Life Education Queensland in Weeks 4 and 5 of this term. The Primary Program aligns to the Australian Curriculum Learning Area of Health and Physical Education and will be delivered by an experienced Life Education Consultant. These sessions include interactive learning opportunities for students from Prep to Year 6. Each grade will engage in age-appropriate modules focusing on physical and emotional growth, nutrition, safety, and respectful relationships. There will also be a Parent webinar on offer entitled – ‘Raising Resilient Children.’

SSRC (STUDENT SERVICES REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL) ELECTIONS

Nominations and elections for SSRC in Grades 3-6 will take place this week during class time.  Students who have not served two years consecutively on the SSRC are invited to nominate for these positions. This year, SSRC members will serve on the council for one semester, rather than one year, allowing more opportunity for students to serve the school and wider community.
