Year 5 Space Invaders 2020
This term Year 5 students were busily planning and developing a Space Invaders Presentation and Activity to replace our school’s annual Science Week Expo. This culminated in teams of Year 5 students ‘invading’ an individual class each (in a COVID safe way) this week (Week 10); to deliver their presentations and conduct a hands-on Space Sciences activity with their nominated Prep to Year 6 class.
The activities assisted the Year 5 students to develop their problem solving, collaboration and presentation skills and they included: Oort Cloud Dough, ‘mock’ Magnetic Slime, Mar’s Rover Racing, Galaxies in a Jar, Planet Piñata and Space Trivia, Black Hole Demonstration, Make your own Solar Eclipse and Bike Pump Rockets.
It was an exciting way to celebrate, explore and foster curiosity about science!
Some of our feedback was:
“Prep Red thoroughly enjoyed your space visit today. We were talking about it all afternoon. Thank you for teaching us about the planets in a fun way. We LOVED the piñata and the buzzer game. Well Done!!” ~ Ms Jenny Linderberg
“Awesome effort to everyone today! It was a “BLAST!”” ~ Mrs Jocelyn Bakker
“Galaxies in a Jar were really cool! The different things inside represented elements of galaxies really well!” ~ Year 6 Class
“Preppies were very interested in the Mars Rover. Great activity! The Preps loved it!” ~ Prep Blue
“It was interesting learning who discovered Magnetic Fields. We LOVED the slime!!!” ~ Year 1

BOOK WEEK: 19th– 23rd October, 2020
St John’s Book Fair & Grandparents’ Day
It is with sadness and great deliberation St John’s Book Fair and Grandparents’ Day has been cancelled for 2020. Due to COVID-19 and circumstances beyond the school’s control it was decided to cancel this year’s event.
St John’s will celebrate Book Week this year but with a difference to our usual colourful celebrations.
“CURIOUS CREATURES WILD MINDS” is this year’s book week theme. During Book Week celebrations the students will participate in class and whole school activities. A colouring, drawing competition and dress up parade will be held over the week where students will have the chance to win prizes from our local book shop, Dymocks. St John’s would like to thank Terese, Phil and staff from Dymocks for the support they have shown us over the years to help us celebrate Book Week. Certainly, 2021 celebrations will be a gigantic event.
Dress up as a character to celebrate Book Week 2020!
On Friday the 23rd of October (Week 3), the school will hold a fancy-dress parade where children and staff will have the opportunity to dress up as a wild animal character or an imaginary creature from one of their favourite books.
We are sorry to inform parents, friends, and grandparents that due to stringent health measures with COVID regulations, we cannot invite parents to this year’s parade. We will make sure to post lots of photos from the day on the school’s website and Facebook page for all to see. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Regards,

Pastor’s Message
NAMES
In traditional societies names were even more important than they are for us. Names were intrinsic to the person and names contained power. Names reflected something of the essence of the person.
My first name means ‘watchman/ the one who looks for danger’. Our first son is Benjamin which means `son of my right hand’. In the Old Testament God gave His name to Moses (Exodus 34) `I AM WHO I AM’ which is usually translated as YAHWEH or JEHOVAH. `Jesus’ means `Jehovah/Yahweh is my salvation’.
We read in Acts 4:12: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (JESUS) under heaven given to humanity by which we must be saved. And that is why Jesus is the only name you will hear in a mocking manner. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
For most of us, however, the name of Jesus is the most powerful and wonderful name of all. May God continue to bless you and our entire school community.
Pastor Greg Graham

Curriculum Connections
Struggles = Growth
No one likes to struggle. Struggle is unpleasant and uncomfortable, but there is no growth without it. When we “save” children from struggle, we prevent them from reaching their full potential.
It’s only through struggle that children learn to push past their comfort zone, develop persistence and problem-solving skills, and ultimately increase their capacity to reach goals and contribute to the world.

The Glory of the Garden
By Rudyard Kipling
Our [St John’s] is a garden that is full of stately views,
Of borders, beds and shrubberies and lawns and avenues,
With statues on the terraces and peacocks strutting by;
But the Glory of the Garden lies in more than meets the eye.
For where the old thick laurels grow, along the thin red wall,
You’ll find the tool – and potting-sheds which are the heart of all
The cold-frames and the hot-houses, the dung-pits and the tanks,
The rollers, carts, and drain-pipes, with the barrows and the planks.
And there you’ll see the gardeners, the men and ‘prentice boys
Told off to do as they are bid and do it without noise;
For, except when seeds are planted and we shout to scare the birds,
The Glory of the Garden it abideth not in words.
And some can pot begonias and some can bud a rose,
And some are hardly fit to trust with anything that grows;
But they can roll and trim the lawns and sift the sand and loam,
For the Glory of the Garden occupieth all who come to comb.
Our [St John’s] is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing, “Oh, how beautiful,” and sitting in the shade
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel-paths with broken dinner-knives.
There’s not a pair of legs so thin, there’s not a head so [quick],
There’s not a hand so weak and white, nor yet a heart so sick
But it can find some needful job that’s crying to be done,
For the Glory of the Garden glorifieth everyone.
Then seek your job with thankfulness and work till further orders,
If it’s only netting strawberries or killing slugs on borders;
And when your back stops aching and your hands begin to harden,
You will find yourself a partner In the Glory of the Garden.
Oh, Adam was a gardener, and God who made him sees
That half a proper gardener’s work is done upon his knees,
So when your work is finished, you can wash your hands and pray
For the Glory of the Garden that it may not pass away!
And the Glory of the Garden it shall never pass away!
Thank you for working in partnership with us.
Grace and peace,
Chris Mallett
