Pastor’s Message
I LOVE SAILING
Anyone who knows me for a while will find out that I really enjoy sailing. I started when I was 23 years old and have owned boats ever since- mainly of the beach catamarans. I love being on the water, I love the blue skies, I love seeing fish, seals, whales, manta rays but not sharks! I enjoy the racing and occasionally winning a trophy.
So when I find some one else who is interested in sailing you can hardly stop me from talking! But of course not everyone is interested in such conversation and so it quickly dries up (pun intended). And so it is with my love for Jesus Christ. Especially, when I am in an environment where I would not expect to find other Christians, it is a real joy when someone shares their love for Jesus and away we both go.
But sadly there are other occasions where people have that facial expression that tells me to be quiet. Most people are okay to hear about church and even God but when I speak about Jesus- the barriers go up. Still I do not give up- in such circumstances I pray. Our congregation regularly prays for our school and all of our needs.
May the Lord of peace give you his peace today.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Greg Graham

Curriculum Connections
ICAS
Congratulations to our students who participated in the ICAS English and Mathematics assessments recently. We had 17 students complete the English assessment and 21 students complete the Mathematics assessment. Mrs Anderson and I were very impressed with the attitude and rigour displayed by all participants – Well Done for giving it your best! I will advise parents of results when they become available.
Home Readers
Thank you to the families who are returning home readers each Monday. As part of our COVID -19 safe approach we are needing to quarantine books prior to them being returned to the shelf and re-issued to the next student. As you can imagine this is holding up a large flow of readers as they are left sitting. We respectfully ask that all families try really hard to return home reading books on the Monday morning so that we can keep the flow of books going. Thank you.
School Based Assessments
We are moving toward the back end of Term 3 which means that students are involved in assessments and tests. Some students do worry when faced with a test and we respect this. As we explain these processes to our students we are focused on the fact that tests are one way in which teachers can measure where a student is at on certain topics.
These tests and assessments are important, and teachers need this information to help the students with their learning. It is about knowing what students can do and what we need to plan and teach them in the future.
Please encourage your child to do their best – that is all we expect, and each one of them has unique talents and gifts that school tests do not measure.

From the Principal
Wreckers or Builders
This is a poem I came across many years ago and I think it has a powerful life message for us all.
I watched them tearing a building down,
A gang of men in a busy town.
With a ho-heave-ho and lusty yell,
They swung a beam and a sidewall fell.
I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled,
As the men you’d hire if you had to build?”
He gave me a laugh and said, “No indeed!
Just common labour is all I need.
I can easily wreck in a day or two
What builders have taken a year to do.”
And I tho’t to myself as I went my way,
Which of these two roles have I tried to play?
Am I a builder who works with care,
Measuring life by the rule and square?
Am I shaping my deeds by a well-made plan,
Patiently doing the best I can?
Or am I a wrecker who walks the town,
Content with the labour of tearing down?
— Unknown
We are all human and of course as human beings we can be prone to the evils of ‘wrecking’. Often the attributes of being dishonest, telling untruths, making misguided comments, or even gossiping are not the way set out to be! Unfortunately, without the facts, and speaking only through our perceptions, can be demeaning, degrading, and hurtful to those around us. This can particularly be the case as we work toward the end of the term. Adults are tired and so are the children. Unless one actually witnesses an event or has the facts, here-say doesn’t make it the truth. Fortunately, we have a school whose principles, beliefs and ethos are based, among other things, on the notions of truth, trust, honesty and ‘building’.
Working together makes us feel good about ourselves and creates trust in others. It fosters relationships. It seems not much in fashion these days to talk about the benefits of such but the benefits are undeniably there and they are valuable and worth the trouble. I see it daily in our students, staff and parents.
Parent Lounge
Thank you to those families who are already using Parent Lounge, I hope that you have found it useful.
Our Parent Lounge not only enables parents to see what is happening but is also a quick and easy way to update important information including if your child is going to be absent or late to school. I encourage all families to use Parent Lounge especially when your child will be absent so that we can ensure our records are up to date.
Should you have any issues accessing Parent Lounge, please phone the school on 4132 6888 or email school@stjohnsbundaberg.qld.edu.au during office hours for assistance.
Food Reminders
A gentle reminder that we are a nut and whole egg product free school. The reason for this is because we have some children who are anaphylactic to these products. As such, we respectfully ask that that children do not bring any whole egg or nut products to school, please.
Also, please be reminded that, owing to Covid-19, birthday cakes and goodies must be individually packaged and purchased through an approved food venue with appropriate licences to produce and serve food. Again the safety of our children is paramount during this time.
Thank you for your understanding.
We truly do have a terrific school which is a direct result of teachers, parents and students working together – even though we find ourselves operating in unique times! Communication and relationships remain a key focus for all of us at St John’s!
Thank you for working in partnership with us.
Grace and peace,
Chris Mallett
